Is there a square footage minimum for a family of four applying for an apartment. The children are opposite sex. The building only has 2 bedroom. I would like a larger one 2 bedroom/2 bath

There are not special extra big apartments set aside for families. You are eligible for the exact same apartments as any other group that falls into the size range for two-beds.

developers actually reserve the smallest sized units for the affordable apartments. so if you want a huge apartment you probably wont get it through a lottery.

The apartments in general, at least in the new buildings in Manhattan, seem to be pretty small. Even the ones that are market rate, when I look at floor plans on StreetEasy, for example.
