I agree, 90sSitcom. When I was reading the post by Thwibaeltom, I thought, "Good luck living in Manhattan without roaches!" But to tell you the truth, I was also sickened and disheartened reading the original post about the roaches crawling all over the person's door. That is NOT normal, even for Manhattan. (And I have found in my own experience Manhattan in 2020 to be much better roach-wise than back in the day. I believe the invention of Combat traps is the reason.)

Since I read that original post, I have lost all enthusiasm for Penn South. I am distressed that a situation could get to be that bad without management taking strong action and doing whatever it takes to rectify the problem.

And plus, what about the resident(s)? How is any person in his or her right mind able to overlook that? How bad much conditions be inside that apartment? It's a question of health and safety.

Yes, roaches happen. But to have an infestation get that bad? There's no excuse. What the heck is happening at Penn South?

My guess is the resident is a hoarder. If that's the case and the owner doesn't let people into the apartment to remedy the situation there is only so much Penn South can do. Legally its a lot of paper work, phone calls and people to deal with the situation.
I've mentioned on this forum before, I rented from an owner of a co-op building. Nice building in midtown. Owner sold the small studio (250sq ft) I rented for 500k some years later.
There was an older woman who was a hoarder and had dementia. She had every kind of critter in her apartment. The co-op hard a very hard time dealing with her and getting access to her apartment. She didn't ever want anyone coming in. They contacted numerous social service programs, tried to get a hold of people who knew her etc. But they couldn't fix the issue if they couldn't get in.

Agree! I guess I've managed surviving many years in NYC by selecting the right building. If the building is clean and the apt is well maintained (with maintenance and holes continuously fixed), it's less likely that you'll see many even if the neighbors have them. I hope one of the current residents could comment whether roach infestation is common or that was an isolated incident?

Has anyone seen the pictures in the FB group? I left the group because it was annoying how every other post was political (lol) but the pictures were horrific. Easily 50+ roaches on the door, floor, etc. I would be RAISING HELL if I were their neighbor. It was building 10 if anyone cares.

No. I requested to join the group, but was not let in yet or was denied. Did you take a picture of the picture posted to share?!

Well, Facebook community groups tend to guard their privacy. Where I live, they're pretty careful about not letting nonresidents join the group. And after the roaches story was posted here, the PS people might be less inclined to let others in.

Also, our moderators don't allow political postings and also mean-spirited attacks. That tends to keep the discourse civil and focused on community issues.

I sent an email about getting put on hold. I saw today that I'm about 20 spots up from the beginning.
I confirmed that my spot will move, but I won't be called. I was also informed that about 10-15 vacancies (not sure if just studios or all waitlists, but it seemed like studio vacancies) are being filled by calling about 20-30 or however many is needed to fill the vacancies. I'm probably going to put my app on hold, get my down-payment, and then get off hold. Hopefully by then it's a hop, skip, and jump to closing.

Hello,
My daughter is nearing the top of the studio wait list and unfortunately was unemployed for several months due to Covid. Although she has savings for a nice down payment her recent employment looks pretty bleak on paper. Does anyone know how Penn South is considering Covid-affected employment? Also, my parents both passed away recently and I could help her with a sizeable down payment to lower her month costs. Is that allowed? Thanks for any insights!
