Hi folks.

Quick question. Let's say you accept an apartment that you've won through the lottery. What happens to your other applications submitted through Housing Connect? Can you still apply for others? and while living in the accepted one, can you be found eligible to win another apartment lottery?

Someone I know, won a studio, but really wanted a 1bedroom and is undecided if they should take it or just wait.

Thanks in advance.

Yes you can still apply once you win and move to a lottery apartment and of course you can always move out. There's no rule setting a limit to how many times you can win or move to different lotteries.

My advice to your friend is to take the studio and keep applying until they land the one bedroom they want.

Thank you! I don't know why we thought it was a be all, end all type of situation as if she was going to be trapped there forever

That makes sense. I only thought that once you are approved with HPD, then they kick you off of all lotteries.

Back to this, so my friend submitted paperwork for the studio and just won another lottery for a 1 bedroom. The studio lottery seems to be moving along while the 1 bedroom just asked for documents and no response yet.

Anyone had experience with having submitted documents for 2 lotteries? Let’s say she signs the lease for the studio and then a month or so later she gets found eligible for the 1 bedroom, can she break her lease or would Hpd even still review her application since she accepted one and they both were so close together?

I haven't been through this myself, but a lease is a legal document, and she may have trouble getting out of it.

Can she tell the first one, the studio, that she would prefer to go on a wait list for a one bedroom in the same building? That might buy her time without deep-sixing the first lottery altogether.

These things are very hard to time!

I asked my landlord's office if I can break the lease and they said yes. They said that all I have to do is just come into the office and they will draw up a new one of when I will leave. But that was before the pandemic. Not sure if that situation has affected their policy. Point is, different landlords have different policies for their developments.

I'm pretty sure that the more luxury a building is, the more of a waiting list it has. Overall, there is no shortage of people wanting a lottery apartment, trust me when I tell you.

It’s different for each property I believe for her current apartment she was at $51k but for the others she was $75k.
