I think that if it’s getting to the point of outsourcing opinions to the internet - stay in the old place. The extra savings is a huge deal, but if he likes the current place and isn’t compelled by anything in the new place (and the prospect of savings isn’t exciting enough to get him to jump on the place), staying makes sense.
I would take the $2000 apartment. $600 less a month is a good amount of money to save especially with the rising cost of daily living. Plus it's not much of a different size-wise.
