Under most circumstances, rent arrears do not appear on your credit report. It will only show up if the landlord got a judgment (or was able to send it to collections). Under $5k total will not disqualify you, but if your credit score is above 580 I'd recommend going the credit report route instead just to avoid having to deal with it. The credit check has to be done on the would-be tenant--I'm not sure who else it would be done on?

Please exercise caution, though, and don't move into an apartment you can't afford just because it's labeled "affordable." Sometimes the rents are not truly affordable for everyone in the income range.

And I’m confused on your last message on that lol

I asked IF you owe money on your rent statements would that affect you getting the apartment. Not everyone gets a rent receipt where it just says “Rent paid for march 2024 800$” , on my rent statement it’s a break down saying how much I’m supposed to pay X how much I paid X how much I owe. I’m having a bit issue’s with my credit I do not want anyone checking it also unless it’s a background check. I’m going to submit my statements and let everyone knows how it goes. Thank you

If it's not on the credit report, and you use the credit report, then they won't know about the back rent.

If you are applying as a household, I think all adult applicants have to be eligible. You will be jointly and severally liable for the rent (i.e., they can come after any of you for all of it).

If it's not you who owes the $4K...do not sign a lease with that other person!!! Their money problems then become yours.

Good luck.
