This might be a stupid question but im wondering. I think you might have to be a US citizen to get an apartment but i could be wrong. Does anybody know if NYC housing lotteries are open to migrants?

They are asking developers to take in more homeless people so that the immigrants can live at the shelters were homeless people are currently living.

No if you are undocumented you can not win a unit. Providing a SS is part of the requirements

Article explaining : https://www.6sqft.com/nyc-wants-deve...ouse-homeless/

There also is a thread already on this topic

You are wrong....

NYC under BdeB made the housing lottery process "inclusive" and against "inequality". Illegal immigrants, migrants, illegal aliens, green card holders, and anyone else not a US citizen or legal resident are eligible.

https://access.nyc.gov/programs/nyc-...ation%20status.

Main thing is NYC residents are given priority, but that's all. Otherwise if applicants pass other requirements for apartment such as income, background, employment etc... they're good to go as anyone else.

IIRC asylum applicants must wait about 180 days to receive work authorization. Once that happens they can get legal jobs same as green card holders.

https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/r...%20an%20asylee.)

OTOH many of these "migrants" are already working off the books and making bank.

If you’re working off the books what W2/W9 etc do they have to provide though? That’s part of the document requirement ?

Anyway these immigrants are being placed in shelters it’s the homeless people with vouchers who are being given more units in affordable housing not immigrants..

Again in about five to six months (give or take) these "migrants" can obtain work authorization, then once find work can apply for lottery apartments just like anyone else.

Next many of these "migrants" have family here in NYC. If they make up part of a household that qualifies for a lottery apartment that is another way in...

There is a huge push by the majority progressive/liberal/democrats leading city council to scrap the mandatory 90 day period of being in shelter system before being eligible vouchers or other housing assistance from city. They want these "migrants" or a least those who are families with children to have same access. If that happens these asylum people can be placed just as other homeless in lottery buildings with open units. City will do what they've done at the Dime and elsewhere, pick-up either whole or part of tab.

There are currently about *20 LARGE* migrants already arrived in NYC, and more are coming daily. Anyone who believes city is going to keep putting them in tent cities or remain in shelter system for years should think again.

You only have to look at where political power is gravitating in city to see how things are going to play out.

I guess we will have to wait and see how it all turns out. There is already a high demand for housing not just lottery apartments - housing in general. We are also going through a housing crisis. Looks like something is going to have to give and pretty soon to…

Having gone through the process, I would think the need for quick communication, at least at the end of the process and the documentation requirements would be practically impossible for this group of people.

Since the original article came out two weeks ago I haven't heard of any traction with this actually happening. I did read this article : https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/23/n...ric-adams.html

"His social services commissioner, Gary Jenkins, is under investigation over whether he sought to conceal violations of the city’s right-to-shelter law when migrants stayed overnight at an intake center over the summer."

"We have vacant hotels. We’ve got unionized labor hotels that should be prioritized in this crisis moment,"

"Advocates have suggested that the mayor adopt an intermediate solution: expand a housing voucher program to migrants seeking asylum and eliminate the rule that requires a 90-day shelter stay before a housing voucher can be used."
