Hi - does anyone know how things work if you apply for a lottery with an address that had CB preference and then moved out of state during the application process?

Applied for a lottery a couple of years back when local, was reached out to for documents in the fall of 2022 after moving, and just recently got called for an apartment visit.

Wondering if they reached out to us for a visit based on the address on the original application, and haven’t reviewed the documents we shared in the fall before doing so (which included our out of state lease), even though that was months ago.

I guess the concern would be that we would go through these next steps thinking they have already acknowledged our out of state move, only to find out in the end that a unit would go to a current NYC resident with a lower log number.

If the allotment of CB units had been filled already then it would not seem to be an issue. You should ask to confirm with them CB preference in not an issue here. With what you have told us, I can’t tell one way or the other.

Thanks. We didn’t hear back after submitting the additional docs in the fall, and then the local leasing office reached out separately, so not sure what communication, if any, between leasing office and eligibility specialist. Will ask if the allotment of CB units have been filled, thanks for that.

You will have to prove your current address as part of the process of being approved. Regardless of CB preference, if you are now living out of NY state, you will be pushed out of the NYC general preference category that all NYC resident applicants enjoy. While those living outside of NYC are eligible for a housing connect lottery unit, you are in line behind all applicants that are NYC residents so your chances are highly unlikely.

Ah, so you’re saying even though we shared our current out of state address last fall, there’s a chance this information hasn’t been been reviewed yet prior to the leasing office reaching out for an apartment visit?

I agree with linamonroll, but I also think it’s weird you would be called in to view an apartment after the marketing agent saw that you are now out of state. I don’t know what’s going on. A head-scratcher for sure!

Is it possible that it’s an expensive apartment (high bracket) in a building that no one in NYC wants?

I did read a post in this forum where a person said her friend in New Jersey had gotten a lottery apartment, so maybe strange things do happen.
