There was a fire in my apartment building last summer. A few apartments on the same line were damaged by the fire and/or water and they had to vacate. My apartment had no damage, but we were without hot water for a month or two and gas for several months. The lease/rent was suspended from July of last year to February of this year.

I received a request for documentation from a building. How would I show rent paid if they couldn't legally charge me rent? I could only provide receipts of payment for April-June '22 and February-April '23. would I be able to explain this lapse with a letter from the FDNY and the landlord or do I have to go the credit check route? Thanks in advance for any help!

Information should be provided on a need to know basis. Don't sweat what hasn't yet happened.

Send in documentation you have, if they have any questions then supply answers. In meanwhile would gather up supporting documents just in case.

Every apartment has a "rent roll" which is sort of a ledger account of all rent asked and paid. If it comes to it and more information is requested your LL can supply documentation as to what rent was asked for periods mentioned and why it wasn't paid.

If no rent was asked for months you mentioned LL has this noted in their records at least for accounting purposes. You should have been receiving rent notices with "zero" amount due or some other notification for each month in question you did not legally owe rent.

Thanks for your help! The documents I already submitted are in review status and I’ll get my supporting documents re: rent in order. Fingers crossed
