Unit retracted (lease, title, building)

Has anyone come across getting offered a unit then the very next day being told it was an oversight and no more units are available?

It did happen to me a few months ago. I was contacted to tour apts, select the apt of my preference and then sign a lease. We did not get to the signing of the lease, because they “overlooked” my log number. They told me that I would be on a “waitlist”, but few weeks later just said there’s no more units available.

That is terrible. I thought they only contacted if there are enough units

Umm no. They contact more people than units available because everyone doesn’t qualify or accept the unit.

This sounds like they did not really offer you a unit and just actually requested documents. They ask for documents in batches, even if there is only 1 unit available they could ask 100 people to submit documents and the lowest log number that wants it and qualifies gets it.

If this happened to me (all the way to the actual assigning of the unit, NOT just having documents requested), I would complain to HPD. Not because I was entitled, but because the chances of shenanigans are larger in this context, and, at any rate, HPD should hear about the agency screwing up like this. It just shouldn't be happening and it's unfair to the applicant.

Again, showing the unit means nothing. They can call 100 people to see 1 unit and still the person that is qualified with the lower log number gets it. This does not mean they are offering you the unit.

That's not an offer of a unit. That's just a viewing. They process applications in batches and may show a unit to a batch of applicants who have passed the first stage of review. You have a while to go after a showing and aren't guaranteed a unit until they offer you a lease to sign.
