I'm looking for non-biased advice from people that live in NYC.
Here it goes...
I'm 24 years old and am currently living in Buffalo, NY (6 1/2 hours away). I graduated in 2008 with a Bachelors degree in accounting and just landed a job as a staff accountant paying $38,900. The thing is, I can't stand the job. I realize I spent a lot of time and will be spending a lot of money to get a career in the accounting field, but it's not for me. It's completely different from what we were taught in school and I am certain I can't spend the rest of my life in a cubicle.
With that being said, I'm looking into community colleges in NYC to start a career as either a registered nurse or physical therapist assistant. Does anyone know if there are a lot of job opportunities in those fields? The schools I'm looking into are Westchester Community College, Bronx Community College, Hostos Community College, and LaGuardia Community College. I know they're not in the greatest areas expect for WCC, but I can deal with that. I would probably be looking into apartments in the Bronx or the Astoria area in Queens depending on what school I chose. I've been planning on moving to NYC for quite a while now and have saved up enough money to cover bills, food, rent (with a roommate), etc. for six months. I also plan on getting a part time job in retail or possibly as a bookkeeper while I go to school.
Do you guys think this is a crazy idea? Also, what are your opinions on the nursing programs at the schools I listed and nursing/pt assistant as a career in NYC? Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Your idea doesn't sound crazy to me at all.
The Bronx isn't nearly as bad as everyone thinks and BCC is supposed to have a good nursing program from what I have heard.Lots of decent, very affordable neighborhoods in The Bronx so you will be fine if this is where you land.
Good luck whatever you decide.Sounds like it will work out.
