I had a friend who is actually a member of the Tea Party, White, Very conservative, Anti-Obama but was a big time dealer of the hard core stuff. He's married with 2 kids and a great father. He looks like your all-American boy. Point is that anyone could be a drug dealer and that Whites aren't usually your low-level street dealer and/or does a much better job in concealing their activities than many minorities. I can go do any Minority and/or low-income neighborhood and see a drug deal going on. Though, I see them out in the open at least once a week in Willamsburg/Greenpoint which aren't minority dominated.

I dont think the real reason that Hipsters go to lower-income neighborhoods is for drugs, although I am sure some do. But really who cares..if it isn't the hipsters buying drugs someone else will. And if anyone with half a brain knows...you can buy drugs in NYC anywhere. And you don't even have to leave your home...dealers deliver to you discreetly all the time...in the best of neighborhoods in NYC.

This is kind of a silly thread..and completely anecodotal. Some hipsters do..therefore all do? Come now!

There are probably a lot of reasons including maybe drugs but the biggest reason might be that the ghetto is often the complete opposite of where they grew up.Sort of like a form of adolescent rebellion.

I would agree with that bluedog...its the same reason alot of innercity people move the 'burbs...for a radical change/start over/experience something completely different.

Except when too many inner city folk move to burbs those places instantly become ghettos, case in point Long Island.

On the converse no matter how many hipsters move into the inner city, it wont become Iowa or Soho. That is because they don't drive out the residents with violent crime.

Well,Williamsburg became Disneyland.

And they may not drive residents out with crime but they inadvertently do wind up displacing the residents by putting upward pressure on rents.

So first hipsters continually move to places like Williamsburg because the rent is cheap, but somehow they end up causing increase in rent?

It is probably not demand because those kinds of neighborhoods have a constant influx of poorer people moving in them, particularly immigrants and other minorities.

There needs to be an additional factor to make your idea logical.

Hipsters move into ghetto. Landlords, realtors take note of increased presence of people who are not on welfare. Higher rents ensue. It's not rocket science.
