Hi

I am in the eastern Bronx area and was wondering how to get to upstate NY in either Westchester, Rockland, or Orange county areas. I am getting a ride from one of those counties so I can be pretty flexible, but I don't want to go to Port Authority or Hoboken as it generally takes over an hour to get to those places and I'm going in the opposite direction which kills a lot of time. Also doing this in the least amount of transfers as possible. I tried talking to GWB bus terminal but they weren't that helpful. Thanks

The easiest way to get to points north from your location is via train. I would take the bus to the Fordham Metro-North station, and then you can take the train into Westchester. Depending upon the part of Westchester you want, you would be on the Harlem Line train, which is roughly in the middle of the county. The Harlem Line train does go to White Plains, which is not too inconvenient for Rockland, along 287, just don't cross the Tappan Zee during rush hour, unless your driver likes traffic.

If you want to get to Nyack, it's easier to take a Hudson Line train to Tarrytown and then the TappanZeeExpress bus from Tarrytown to Nyack. It's a little more challenging, involving bus transfers, from Parkchester, since the stations on that line are to the west: Marble Hill, Spuyten Duyvil, Riverdale.

Yes, but the New Haven Line would only get the OP to Lower Westchester, and is further from Rockland. Good point, though, so that the OP does not assume all trains are Harlem Line at Fordham.

You can go very far north on a train from Fordham, all the way into Dutchess. Orange and Rockland, no, because you would have to cross the Hudson, which would require either taking the train to Tarrytown and the bus to Nyack; or, you would have to leave from Penn to take the NJ-bound trains, transfer at Secaucus Junction, and head to Nanuet or Port Jervis.
