I've heard people metion the idea of going on vacation to NYC but staying in Jersey because hotels are cheaper as well as parking.
Does that seem like a reasonable option? Are prices that much lower? What about parking? I know I've paid as much as 50 dollars a day in parking in NYC. A couple days parking would be 100 towards hotel fees.
How would I commute to Manhattan? Ferry I'm assuming? How late will the Ferry run because one of the joys I have in visiting NYC is staying out late walking around Times Square at mid night.
It's a reasonable option, but I don't see why visitors just don't get hotels in the boroughs. Staten Island seems to be a very easy and cheaper way to do it.
I suggest you stay in Long Island City in Queens which just across the East River from Manhattan and a short subway ride from Midtown. (See Long Island City - Queens Hotels near New York - Book Long Island City - Queens Hotels in New York, New York | Expedia (http://www.expedia.com/Long-Island-City-Queens-New-York-Hotels.0-n6056462-0.Travel-Guide-Filter-Hotels - broken link))
people stay in NJ because hotels are hideously expensive in manhattan, something like $250 a night on average (rack rate).
try someplace near a PATH line in NJ (hoboken, jersey city, e.g) where you can get a 24/7 cheap train to manhattan. The PATH line is sepaerate from city subways but unlike buses, they run all night so you can stay out w/o worrying about when to get home. PATH trains come into the city on the west side at the WTC site and up 6th ave to 34th st.
Alot of tourists stay in NJ , you'd be surprised even i was when i first found out. Most tourists stay in Jersey City & Weehawken because of there 24/7 connections. The NJ Gold Coast is a mini NYC its just quieter. Same level of diversity , Transportation etc , most New Yorkers won't admit to that. All the Hotels in JC have direct Access to the PATH trains.

You don't really believe that do you. Most people dont even know what a new jersey gold coast is
As to the op. If your going to NY, go to NY. Why half-ass it. You can easily get a hotel in queens or bk

Actually they do , why don't you stop down grading Jersey? If you stay in Weehawken or JC you get great Manhattan views. At half the price and still 24/7 Access to NYC. Alot of ppl stay on the NJ side , maybe if NYC stop making things so expensive they would stay over there.....
I have to agree with Nexus. I live in JC and its the same thing basically just more laid back. Still have people walking around, little shops and restaurants and 24/7 subway service (PATH). That said, I understand the "it isn't NYC" argument. However, to hear some people talk its like your out in the middle of Iowa or something. If you're doing JC I would recommend staying downtown somewhere as far as the hotel goes. I am not familiar with Weehawkin.
