Ok, So I rent from a coop owner. This is my second year in this place. Aside from my annoying downstairs neighbor who is here every time I take a step. I have been having a few issues with my unit owner.

He expects me to not "live" really in the apartment. I understand I should have respect for the apartment (which I do) but at the same time, I am not going to keep an apartment as neat as a showroom 24/7/365. It all started when I had a gas leak. The stove I had was ancient (you had to light it with a lighter before you cooked!) Well when ConEd came they put a flag on the stove saying it needed to be replace. The coned guy said it was one of the oldest stoves he's ever seen.

So reluctantly he got me new appliance. He asked me if I wanted a new refrigerator. Since the refrigerator worked fine and wasn't too old I said I would rather have a new microwave. He said now because most apartments don't have microwaves. So I got a new dishwasher, stove and refrigerator. After the appliances where installed he gave me a long lecture on how to clean the stove, and made me clean it in front of him to show him I knew how and buy special clothes and such and test all of them. And I've been cleaning it!

Then after the appliances where in I had a mouse. This was because they had to make a new hole when they put in the new dishwasher and the stove because the appliances where so old the hook ups where illegal. So I had a mouse, I hired an exterminator which was $300 to come and fill any holes and I haven't seen the mouse since. He said he NEVER had this problem. It wasn't that big of a deal to me since it's gone.

Now he comes over once a week, or so to "check on things" but he's really just seeing if the appliances are clean. It's actually kind of annoying because I didn't realize I was still in college and had an RA coming to check my room.

My question is is this normal? Does anyone here rent out a coop? Do you come and check on your tenants weekly?

Are you sure he doesn't have some kind of a thing for you ? Sounds weird to me.

No he moved in with his partner. I guess the last tenant who he rented to (still lives in our building) said he did the same thing.

You do not have to let him in legally but you run the risk of not getting a lease renewal in a coop.

He has a key. Also I am not looking to renew. I would rather live somewhere where I could LIVE and not have to worry about every little scratch. Normal wear and tear is normal! It's not like I am destroying anything.

I would tell him he doesn't have the right to enter, and then enforce that. It is not his right and it's a total invasion of privacy.

Also, regarding the exterminator - I'm surprised you had to pay. Check your lease to see if he is supposed to cover extermination. Most coops (as far as I know) have an exterminator as part of the maintenance.

Blatantly illegal. He has no more legal right to enter your apartment then a thief. Only during an emergency can he enter without your permission, fire, gas leak, flood etc.

My parents who pay the rent asked if he would give $100 towards it and he's being bey tough about it.

That's a good idea. I will check the lease.
