That girl from Ugly Betty, America Ferrera considers herself to be an Afro-Latina. Her family is from Honduras. The Dominican girl who played Lt. Uhura on the last Star Trek movie considers herself to be "blatina." I kind of like that name. Is that a common phrase among Afro-Latin Americans?

I agree. I dont really see Afro colombians here in NYC, we just usually see Mestizo Colombians from slums of Bogota, Medellin, De Cali and others. Afro Colombians are situated primarily by the Carribbean coastline in a city called Cartegena, its Spanish for Carthage. Many blacks from Cartegena were imported from places such as Jamaica and Cuba.

In terms of blacks in the New World this is how it goes
1 Brazil
2 U.S.A
3 Colombia
4 Haiti
5 Dominican Republic
6 Cuba
7 Honduras
8 Jamaica

THe others I dont know

We know slavery was the worse thing to happen to the AA's family structure. Yet it was able to survive and even flourish despite the constant fear that a family member could be sold away. Looking at your previous postings it seems to be an even worse case scenario in Latin American countries. Slaves from Jamaica could be sold all the way to Brazil. What was the systm like? Were they able to have some family structure? Was life so miserable that even the pursuit of happiness evaded them during slavery?

If Haitians are Latin Americans due to being in the Americas and speaking a romance language, are Quebecois also Latin Americans?

Wait till I tell my DD that when she goes to school in Troy, NY she will be only a few hours from Latin America. She will be even more fascinated than knowing its close to Montreal, eh?

In fact in American English, "Latin American" mean Ibero-American. IE hispanic or brazilian.

Latino means hispanic. I don't think I have ever heard a Brazilian called a "latino" though I guess I don't often encounter contexts where that would come up.

There are small Croatian, Polish and Russian-speaking communities in Brazil, Chile,

There are also small clusters of Japanese-speakers in Brazil,

Dutch is the official language of Suriname; there are at least 12 other languages spoken in the country

French is the official language of the French Guiana.

English is also spoken in the Falkland Islands
