I don't think it was staged. The rat looks like a rat. Not sure what a groomed versus ungroomed rat is supposed to look like.
I think the lack of screaming can be chalked up to the train being all guys. Slightly sexist? Yes. True? Probably. That said I probably would have screamed.
I agree, I don't think it was staged either.
Here is a reply that the original creator of the video posted to his YouTube page in response to someone claiming that it was staged:

That would mean everyone on the train including the guy who it crawled on is in on the video. The car was actually packed before I started rolling, everyone got off or went to another car. Also the rat was filthy you just can't tell because of the quality of the video. I also watermarked it because I know that people like to steal videos and upload them as their own like they did with my Times Square brawl video. Lastly even if the video was fake my checks are real.

Sorry, I don't buy it. I think it was in some way staged, but I don't think the homeless guy was in on it. I think the rat was brought in by the videographer. An additional reason why this guy is not believable is because he apparently specializes in these types of videos -- so why would he have waited til everyone exited the train to get his video camera rolling?

I do not believe it was staged! That rat looked terrified and frantic. He clearly did not want to be trapped in the train car and was desperately trying to find a way out.
Rats get such a bad rap - and although I realize the NYC rats carry disease, they really are intelligent creatures and quite interesting.
I happened to catch a few minutes of an MSNBC show about viral videos but couldn't stick around to watch the whole thing. The gist of the show seemed to be that the videos would be investigated to find out whether they are real or staged.
In the opening section, they play a clip of the rat on the subway video, which led me to believe that this was one of the videos they would be investigating. Anyone see the show to find out the real deal?
