hi, i am about to relocate from london to NYC. here in london is a scheme available, in which people can live in vacant properties almost free of charge (to keep squaters out).

have a look here: http://www.camelotproperty.com/home.php/b/gbr-en/home/Home (broken link)

anyone knows of a similar scheme in NYC?

cheers,
chris

I've lived here my entire life (probably longer than you've been alive). Never heard of anything like that.

I think part of the problem here with doing that is that the residences have to be habitable, or the owner/landlord can be fined. The residences are often vacant in the first place because there is something very wrong: heat problems, plumbing (or lack thereof), etc., making it illegal for anyone to live there.

No, not likely. In most of NYC, it's unlikely that squatters would ever be a problem. Squatters only tend to end up in derelict buildings.

I think you're going to have to face the idea of paying rent like a normal person.
