The Fort Greene Houses, shall we say, don't represent the best of Brooklyn. But so many other people have been moving into Fort Greene over the last 20 years, you should be fine.
And just so you'll know for future reference, telling Brooklynites how "safe" your neighborhood in Queens is, well, that's no way to win friends in this borough. (Besides, the safety was purely illusory, since the subways can bring anyone from any place in the city to any other place!)
I live there and I live close to Myrtle, on Carlton ave. Let me tell it is a safe place to live. There are lots of families over here. If it wasn't safe, ppl wouldn't move here with there families. My house is 4 floors (not including out renters, who take up 2 floors). The Houses are very nice actually.
Lots of nice restaurants. Very family friendly. There are good schools. It is great here.

If that is the case, then what you are saying is that the SUBWAYS aren't and can never be safe....
NYC subway system, equal opportunity distributor of misery....
If you don't mind drug dealers, hustlers, and teens with guns, Myrtle Ave is a safe bet
