Depends which line, where and which direction. The 6 is a s***show at all times of day. But, yeah, the busiest is from 730 am to 930 am towards Manhattan/Midtown or 430 pm to 630 pm away from Manhattan/Midtown.

I agree. I take the A train and I try to get on at 7 am to 7:15 am and it gets somewhat crowded in the AM. If it rains/snow, you will have to take an early train since the people who take the bus will take the train. I take the train on the last car (going to Midtown) and the 1st car (coming back to Washington Heights). These are somewhat less crowded in my opinion. In rush hour time, I sometimes let a really crowded train to pass and wait for the next one. Usually, there is another train in 8 to 10 mins. when you start taking the train you will develop a pattern.

Lately, I've had to ride the 1 in the afternoons and it is horrible. I don't know if this is due to service cuts or if it's always been this way. I agree with Jr that if you know a line well, you can figure out when to wait for the next empty train, but with the 1 I keep getting burned. Also, the A (my regular train) has become a lot more crowded in the last few years.

The system runs 24/7, and is most crowded during rush hours. Other than that, what did you mean by "best hours?"
