Yes, people wear furs. Though mostly pretenous types wear them on the streets. If its a *good* fur wearing it on the subway would make you a mark.
Women who wear good expensive furs don't walk around much, don't ride subways either. The furs aren't one off personal treats. They are indicative of a certain lifestyle, which includes car and driver and/or personal luxury car and garaging it everywhere you go in Manhattan. So, you don't really note women wearing good furs on the street.
You will see some few older middle class pretensious middle aged and like yourself young traditionalists walking about, but its not common; and only the pretensious types will be impressed. Most people, despite it being NYC couldn't tell a good fur from something bought off the rack from Macy's.
Now, that said, in the suburbs, go to some function at a country club, and it will be the odd women who doesn't arrive with a fur. I went to a function in Alpine and my GF was the ONLY one w/o fur. She's a fur hater, strange women doesn't like diamonds either! Anyway, if you plan on such functions then it'll be a good buy, but if not...
Oh, and do watch out for PETA nutjobs, they will throw blood on your coat.

I am possibly going to be attending school in the city next fall and living in the outskirts of Manhattan. Was thinking of purchasing a coat like this but was wondering if I would have a hard time or look out of place.
Maybe the Russians? Seriously, you'll look stupid.
