How come lots of people, tourists, etc. think that New York City is only Manhattan. They forget about the other 4 boroughs, and only visit Manhattan and is based on that borough
Even if you think about New York City, it always reminds us of Manhattan
Because that's where the majority of the tourist attractions, landmarks, and tall skyscrapers are.
Not the majority--just the majority of the ones that get publicity!
Speaking historically, all this business of thinking that Manhattan IS New York City is really just a holdover. Prior to 1898, all of the city was, in fact, contained on the island of Manhattan. That hasn't been the case for 111 years now, but old habits die hard.
As a native-born Brooklynite, I object to this. But I acknowledge reality when it stares me in the face.
Because tourist don't know any better. Based on TV and movies, NYC is Manhattan.
Quite frankly growing up in Brooklyn, when we think of the city, we think of Manhattan.
As in like when we planned a trip to manhattan, we would say "We are going to the City"
The reason is that Manhattan does have more attractions (areas, buildings, shoppping, etc) than the other boroughs. Also, consider that NY is expensive as a city (hotel pirzes are crazy) so not everybody can travel to NY many times. If you are a tourist and visit NY for the first time, odds are you want to focus on Manhattan because of the Statue of Liberty, Wall St, Ground Zero, Empire, Rockfeller, Times Square etc..
I do think the boroghs have interesting things to see, but most of tourists would go there only at their 3rd - 4th visit to the city.
As a tourist who visits NY, I agree with what everyone has said about Manhattan just being known as the famous tv show spot and just famous or known mainly for its stores and attractions.
im aware that there are other great boroughs in NY, i guess i just never took the time out to search and find things to do in areas like queens, brooklyn, staten island and so on. Maybe thats a new idea !
