Hi all,

Just moved to NY for school and am living in Valley Stream on Long Island. I'm going to start having to get to New York Downtown hospital at around 6 in the morning. What's the "best" option for doing that? The method I've figured out is LIRR to Jamaica, then J train to Fulton and hoofing it from there. I do have a car, but it seems like parking at Jamaica would be a bad idea. Do I have any other cheaper/faster/more efficient options? Just wondering if I'll have to be on the LIRR at 3:30am to make it there by 6am.

Thanks in advance!

The absoloute cheapest way would be to take the N1 or N4 bus to Jamaica, and then take the (J) to Lower Manhattan. You would be able to get there on one fare ($2.25)

The trip isn't that much slower because the N4 is drop-off-only in Queens, so it can pick up some decent speed along Merrick Blvd.

Here is the N1 schedule: http://www.mta.info/libus/routes/n1/n1_new.pdf (broken link)

The trip to Jamaica on the N4 should take about 30 minutes, and the N1 should take about 40 minutes (though, of course, it depends on what part of Valley Stream you live in). By comparison, the LIRR will take about 15 minutes, but you'll need to pay an extra $165 per month for a monthly pass (the N1 and N4 are basically free when you consider the free transfer to the subway)

Other than that, the cheapest way would be to take the LIRR to the (J).

If you are concerned with taking the fastest way, I would say that you should take the LIRR to Atlantic Avenue, and then take the subway into Lower Manhattan (I'm not sure which subway line stops closest to your job). The trip would be more expensive, but faster.

Good luck!

LIRR (I suppose you have to switch at Jamaica) to Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn. From there take the IRT to either Fulton Street or Wall Street, then walk. This a much quicker route, and avoids bad neighborhoods. Though at that of the morning, I'd avoid the subway.

Frankly, I'd just drive, and park in a garage/lot in and around the hospital. At that time commuting w/b a breeze. Doesn't the hospital have employee parking or discounted parking?
