Got it - William Greenberg Jr. Desserts, Bruce's Bakery (or Zabar's), and Hawthorne Valley Bakery @ Union Square. Thanks for all the suggestions! I might also add a cupcake from either Magnolia Bakery or Crumbs if I have extra room in my luggage.

Just to remind myself later (and for anyone else who's interested): I've heard good things about Ess-A-Bagel, and will also check out other reviews for a classic New York bagel.

For bagels, you may also want to try Kossar's and Murray's. Kossar's is on the Lower East Side, and is famous for bialys, but they offer more than the bialy. Murray's has two locations, Greenwich Village and Chelsea. H&H used to be better, IMO, and I tend to get them from the factory (across from the Intrepid) at odd hours, but recently even going to the factory has not produced the bagel that made the company famous. They're still good, but not great.

Bagels, Babka, Black and White Cookies

I like H&H. I usually go to the one on the UWS because I like the bakeries at Zabars and Fairway as well.

Ess-a-bagel is okay. There is one near my office and we occasionally get a bagel sandwich from there for lunch.

Thanks for the updates all - I think I might need to make extra room in my luggage for all this good stuff!

I can vouch for ess-a-bagel, love it. However, no bagel -no matter how good- stays fresh for long. I wouldn't recommend it for traveling.

Aaaah, there is nothing like a good NYC bagel or even a fresh bialy which is an even rarer NYC treat!

I also would add Junior's cheesecake to the list.

Babka, bialys, pignoli cookies - I've never heard of these before, but I guess I've gotta check them out now! I guess I'll have to pass on the bagels since they won't keep fresh in my fridge plus the hours they'll be in my luggage. Oh well...thanks everyone!
