I'm planning to take my daughter to the Museum of the American Indian and the Staten Island Ferry is right there. So I figured we would take a ride. But once you get to the terminal on the Staten Island side, is there anything to see nearby or is everything a bus ride? I'm thinking maybe the Children's Museum, but I've only been to Staten Island once and all we did was ride the ferry and go right back, so the bus scares me a little, lol! Btw, my daughter just turned 6 if that helps.

I was just thinking how sad is it that I've lived in NYC my whole life and have only set foot there once? They really are the forgotten borough. There's gotta be something to do over there?

Sailors Snug Harbor is worth a look. It was a home for retired seafarers that has some spectacular buildings and the houseboat that the late artist John Noble used for his studio. It is about a mile from the ferry terminal but I would suggest the bus to get passed some of the seedier parts on the way.

The Staten Island Zoo has a great reptile collection but that is definitely a bus ride.

You can also just ride the ferry over and back. One hour round trip and it's free!

As a former resident, I can say with conviction that there is *nothing* to do there. Neither the zoo nor Snug Harbor are what I would consider "close" to the Ferry Terminal. If you're a baseball fan, you could walk over to the minor league stadium nearby, but I really don't think there's anything else within easy walking distance from the terminal that's worth the time.

I realize that it's free, but sometimes I wonder how sage the advice is when people recommend taking the ferry to tourists. If you really have an hour to spare, and it's a nice day, it's a different way to see the city, but unless you live there, there's really not much to entice you to actually get off on the Staten Island side. There are better ways to spend an hour, IMO.

The children's museum's is also a bus ride. Unfortunately, there is nothing to do in walking distance, other than the baseball field.

Thanks for your responses. I guess it's a bus ride to the Children's Museum or just take the ferry and ride back.

Just for your information, the two buses that go to the Children's Museum are the S40 and S44. The S40 leaves you closer to the entrance, but you have to cross Richmond Terrace, so I would recommend taking the S44 to Fillmore Street and walking west along Fillmore Street until you get inside Snug Harbor. The Children's Museum will be on your left.
