My boyfriend and I are planning to move next year. We will be splitting everything right down the middle (bills, rent, etc). I was thinking we would probably need about $5000 to cover moving fees, 1st and last month rent, deposit, etc....does that figure sound about right?
We're both photographers and will begin working as soon as we get there.
In addition to a security deposit, some landlords also want the first and last month’s rent. Tack on a broker’s fee and a prospective renter for that $2,000 apartment is out of pocket nearly $10,000 just to get the keys to the place.

LOL upon reading the above. Check this, say you were fortunate enough to some how get a *minimally* decent apt for $1200 per month. That would be,
$1200 first month's rent
$1200 security deposit
$1200 broker's fee (in some cases, 12-15% of one year's rent)
That leaves you with $1400, and you haven't turned on the utilities, bought furniture, or food!
Without a job from day 1, you two won't last the month.
$15,000 w/b a reasonably safe amount, and you will need to secure employment BEFORE arriving!
