I'm going to be moving to NYC when I graduate in May of 2012. Currently I live in detroit with an internship at an investment firm.

I've been applying to a lot of places hoping to even get just an email, and so far, have received nothing. I've seen a lot of people talk about recruiting agency's on the forum.

So do any of you know of a good recruiter/agency I could go through to help me land a job for when I graduate? I'm looking online, but the only way to really know if they are good or not (my first basis is if their website is respectable, then I look at reviews, then I try to get into contact. If I can get info first hand, that's a lot easier)

So far the only "decent" one I've found is Wall Street Options LLC. Anyone know anything about them? or can recommend a better one?

If you are referring to investment banking, there is currently a hiring freeze for front office positions. You are really going to have to hit the pavement if that is the kind of job you are looking for. I'm not sure about recruiting agencies because I've never had to use one, but cold-emailing and reaching out to HR at banks is also a good idea.

yeah i'm going for anything, front office, back office, middle office. Theres a TON of job postings everywhere though. I've been applying on LinkedIn, Monster, Fins, just emailing, direct web apps...

I'm only going to have a year of experience in the investment banking side, but i also have another 3 years of experience in banking as a whole.

Would reference letters along with my resume and cover letter make it any better? I've yet to see any posting ask for references so i've never included it

For someone straight out of school, their best bet would probably be on campus recruiting. Are you a University of Michigan student? Another option would be to try to get an introduction through someone at your current firm. Somebody has to know someone in NY.

Zero is correct, check with your counselor. Frankly, if you can turn that internship into a job offer, you should strongly consider it, and put your NYC dreams on hold, until the economy comes back.

You should, also, look into an Internship at a NYC firm.

There are people who specialize in placing people in Internships. A friend of mine, years ago, went that route, and eventually was hired by the firm he was placed at. I believe there was a cost involved. Sorry don't remember any details.

Unfortunately, this may be the worst time to be graduating and looking to get to Wall Street w/o having excellent creds from athe top school, and having been recruited by a firm, and the days of hiring mobs of back office people have long been over.
