But I'm sure the possibility was apparent in the cop's heads and they wanted to eliminate that possibility before it started. The irony is that the cops were filming the events during the march, during the incidents, and presumably after (hell you can see them doing it in the Youtube videos). I'm sure if they released the footage, we would see a different story, but well, I'm sure its court evidence.

I'm not the biggest fan of cops, but they're job is to protect and keep the peace. It was a bit harsh, but I doubt politely asking the protesters to be more orderly would've worked. Just my opinion, but to each their own.

Wow so you're suggesting that posters on here and all over the internet are having knee-jerk reactions?!

I'm shocked...

Stri50...kinda the point of protesting IS to create disorder..otherwise..it is just a bunch of people talking. Kinda misses the point don't you think? What the cops are saying is, you can protest, so long as it falls under OUR rules and regulations, where you can protest, and how you can protest, and as part of these protests we will be giving you tickets and summonses, and checking all of you for outstanding warrants and subsquently arresting as many of you as we would like.

Umm..what kind of protest is that! Maybe if we abided by the rules and regulations of Great Britain to protest the taxes on tea, we would not be an independent country nor have the freedoms we enjoy today.

Protesting should be rendered illegal.

As a pure (eagle-)blooded American you're always supposed to accept how things are without uttering a single peep of dissent. Put on "Glee", read "OK Magazine", go to "TGI Fridays" and then to see "My idiot brother" and walk by "these people" (sic! NBC News) protesting a financial system that, yes, destroyed the lives of many, eliminated jobs and affected the economy worldwide, but, since the free market produces winners AND losers, people who lost their jobs are just on the wrong side of the fence. CEO's who got tax payer money to rectify their errors are just on the right side of the fence. It's not called injustice, it's called the free market and capitalism. Pure US of A. So yes, not use your brain, stare at the TV and talk about sports at work is the only thing a true patriot would do. Protesting is a sign of weakness and that you hate your country.

PERIOD!

Nice use of sarcasm here... This one might take awhile for the untrained eye... I have to really hit the books now to study up on the language of sarcasm... Otherwise there'd be no understanding you...

@ available and string ...

I mentioned this already in the crime thread... I am not a police hater... I mention the headlines of corruption for our police force just like I would do for any other government agency or big scandal... And if anyone listened to these morons on the video, it is painfully obvious how far from innocent these protesters were... and yet they were recording the police like they had something... ... freaking hilarious...

What I'd love to see if the cops tape... I'm sure you'd see these people acting like a bunch of apes to try and encite the cops to do something interesting that'd be caught on camera... Cops in this city especially really do have a tough job... they have to deal with all sorts of crazies and still maintain their composure...

@ sobroguy read your posts again and try and realize how dumb what you said sounds... and you talking about the strawman example that available used when he said "what if there's no police force" is the ultimate irony seeing as how that is usually the only argument you use... come on now...

umm I didn't say anything about what constitutes a "proper protest". The thought that there is some correct way to do a protest is absolutely ridiculous since in history some successful protests have been destructive (e.g. American Revolution) and non-destructive (Gandhi).

The OP and others were demanding to know why oh why would the NYPD treat such "peaceful innocent protesters" so harshly. I'm saying the answer is plain and simple. Their job is to keep peace and order. The instant the protesters took to the streets and started disrupting day to day business, the police were obligated to restore order. This obviously can't be done by asking the protesters "pretty please stop doing that". Hell, in that situation, if I was threatening and ignored a cop's order to back off repeatedly, I'd expect my ass to get thrown to the ground and win a free ride on the paddywagon too. Of course people who protest have the option of breaking laws, but to think they won't be held accountable for those actions is absurd.

Yes, the city is crazy $$$. I don't know how most will be able to remain living here.

In terms of "assaulting" and/or arresting. If the "perpetrator" becomes hostile, aggressive, etc.....it is expected that the authorities will take action. However, I don't believe because they are given a badge/gun they should go around assaulting innocent people.

As JIW (the OP) can tell you, I am among the first to see where a police officer might be compelled to use force. I also have a tremendous amount of respect for law enforcement.

But what several among New York's finest have done is beyond reprehensible. It is nothing short of brutality, and it should not be glossed over, downplayed, diminished, accepted, or forgiven. The cops who did this are thugs. They are an embarrassment to their department and the city they serve, and a disgrace to law enforcement everywhere.

You're seriously posting a video from a communist liberal progressive socialist institution that poses as "journalists"?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what the cops are doing in that video. Civil rights? Protected. Freedom of speech? The only ones bleeping out certain words are the so-called "journalists" in that video.

Those "protesters" are disrupting the good, honest, productive and lucrative work that is being done on Wall St. As someone said above, the financial markets are THE ONLY reason why those people are even there. Their parents attained prosperity not because there was once a branch of the American economy called "industry" but thanks to CDS's and CDO's, forcing people into debt and concentrating over 90% of the wealth in the hands of 1% of the population.

I get it, CDS's and CDO's and debt are the reason why their parents lost their jobs now but that's just how it is in a free market. There are losers and there are winners. And the losers should always kiss the feet of the winners. Hence tax payer bail-outs.

So stop wining, bleeding-heart communist liberal progressive socialists! A good beating hasn't done any harm to anyone ever.

grigou, your snarky little wannabe intellectual comments that you've been working so hard at are extremely tired and downright annoying. Try a different schtick. This one is lame.
