How long does it take to get to Jamaica from Freeport, NY on the N4 train? And what train am I suppose to take in order to get to Penn Station from Jamaica?

The Subway system serves the five boroughs of NYC. Freeport is a suburban town on Long Island, in Nassau county. The subway system does not serve Long Island. No subway trains go beyond the borders of NYC.

There is a commuter railroad that serves Long Island, the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). LIRR trains, for the most part, terminate at stations in NYC.

You may take the LIRR at Freeport (or some nearby station) into Jamaica, Queens, and from there switch to the subway system, and the "A" subway line into Penn Station; or you can switch at Jamaica to another LIRR train which will take you to Pennsylvania Station (34th Street and 7th Avenue) in Manhattan.

Using the LIRR all the way to Penn, should take around 45 minutes, give or take 15.

The above is basic info, others can provide more specific information, as to which LIRR stattion and train about switching.

From Jamaica, you can also take the "E" train into Manhattan. What part of Manhattan are you going to?

Then perhaps the LI forum is better for an answer to your question.

I assume you already know that the LIRR travels directly between Freeport and Penn Station, but you don't want to pay the higher fare. Understandable...

In any case, here's the N4 schedule:

http://mta.info/libus/routes/n4/n4_new.pdf (broken link)

Travel time from Freeport to Jamaica is scheduled to take around an hour, depending on the time of day (it takes 47 minutes in the middle of the night and 68 minutes at the height of rush hour). However, these buses can get crowded so the trip time could take longer (and buses could also go MIA)

Once at Jamaica, take the (E) train to Penn Station. You get a free bus-subway transfer when you use a MetroCard.

It's gonna take you AT LEAST 2 hours to make that trip though you can cut down to about 45 mins if you take the LIRR train from Freeport. I think an off-peak ticket is like $8-9 dollars

The fare is $8.25 off-peak and $11.50 during rush hours. A monthly pass to Penn Station costs $254. If the OP is making this trip every day, I highly recommend buying a monthly pass for the LIRR and saving themselves the trouble of the bus and subway: http://mta.info/lirr/about/TicketInfo/LIRRFares.pdf

The trip time is about 50 minutes on the Babylon Branch to Penn Station: http://mta.info/lirr/Timetable/Branch/BabylonBranch.pdf

By comparison, you're talking about at least a 90 minute trip on the N4 and (E) train if everything runs perfectly. Realistically, the trip would take around an hour and 45 minutes when you consider the time you spend transferring, and could easily stretch to 2 hours.

I can understand it if it's a one-time deal (the OP would spend $4.50 rather than $23 for a round-trip ticket), but if the OP's going to be traveling on a daily basis, it's better to just pay the LIRR fare.
