I could be wrong, but I think NYC doormen have a union and you have to be a part of the union in order to work as a doorman. Here's a link to the union website:

Is it true doormen make 70-80k in one of those fancy buildings in Manhattan? I think mostly on untaxed tips.

Find a few buildings that you're interested in and contact the management company that runs them. I don't think you can "buy" the job. The starting salary is about $15/hour. Top pay is $20/hour. Of course, you'll also get gratuities.
