Last year I told my daughter that we could go to NYC to buy a dress for her moving up ceremony to high school this spring. Well, now that date is getting closer, and she's holding me to my promise!
We live Upstate, and she wants something different than the Aeropostale, Forever 21 junk we can find here. She dresses relatively modestly (part of her reason for wanting to shop outside the trendy teen stores). She is looking for something funky or vintage. The ceremony isn't too fancy - most kids wear stuff like you would wear to a daytime wedding. I'm willing to spend a little, but not typical Upper East Side boutique prices.
Any ideas? Stores in outer boroughs are fine, as long as they are easy to get to by public transit from Penn Station.

There's so many out there. Just Google "vintage clothing nyc". Many stores have websites so you can check them out and also get directions. Have fun!!
There's a really cute little shop on 2nd Ave around 9th Street. It's on the west side of 2nd Ave. I don't know the name of it but there are always 2 mannequins out front with dresses on. If you get off the bus on 10th St/2nd Ave and start walking south, you can't miss it.

Thanks! This is in the East Village? Do folks think East Village is overpriced because tourists think it is the place to go? (I really don't know, but often hear up here in Albany that that's the cool place to go.)
Oh, and I should have mentioned that my daughter really likes the style of clothing that the Skeeter character wore in the movie, "The Help," if that helps.
Yeah, I know I could Google things, but looking for the inside scoop since things are not always as they appear on the Internet.
If she wants the Skeeter look, that's not the East Village. That's more the UES, the daughter of the ladies who lunch set, Junior League, etc. For that look, I would recommend the UES, where you may find something vintage at a resale shop; however, some are not terribly discounted from the original prices of the item. If you like to hunt, there are thrift shops like the Arthritis Foundation, and Memorial Sloan Kettering, where you may find some good designer merchandise that's not at too much of a premium, for something a bit vintage, yet not too matronly. I know that these shops do tend to attract donations from locals who do purchase said designer clothing, and that they do have sections that are couture clothing.
There are also salons run by vintage clothing specialists where you can make an appointment to view the collection that they have, and to find something that may potentially be of interest for you.
You may check out New York Magazine, as they have had featured articles on shopping vintage, a have listings of shops and what they offer, that can help narrow down selections for you. I would not be surprised if some of the resale shops did not first purchase some of the goods from the charity shops, knowing when the items for sale are changed, since there are many on the UES who will not sell or consign, but will donate to a worthy cause.

The store I mentioned has EXACTLY that type of clothing!! There are also a couple of vintage shops & thrift shops right on 2nd Avenue as well as a really cute little hat shop on East 7th between 2nd/3rd Ave (she can get a fascinator there -- those are sooo cute!) I wish I could remember the name of the shop on 2nd Ave with the dresses!
Wow, thanks folks! I didn't even consider the Upper East Side because I figured it was beyond my budget, but I see they have a number of thrift shops. Will definitely look at "New York" more closely.
And not to worry, omigawd. Your directions are very clear - we should be able to find the store. Sounds great, and it looks like there are a number of shops in the area.
Now we have to figure out - downtown or uptown, and when do we have time to visit.
