Hi, I'm planning a trip to the big apple early november for me and my g/f were brits btw going to be staying a total of 5 nights in a hostel up on 95th, so i'm wondering, landing at JFK whats the best way to get to my accomdation taxi seems the easiest but goin to cost me near on $50 + tip. So is there a cheaper option of bus? if so what bus? and the cost.
Also how safe is the subway around the city, i've read it fairly safe if you look like you know what your doin, but what about 2 brit accents looking at the subway map.
Thanks
I'm sure to have more questions just cant think of any right now
Lots of folks in Manhattan walking around with subway maps in hand. I remember the one time I went to London folks would sometimes go out of their way to ask if you needed directions. In NYC you'll have to ask, but most folks will be glad to help--esp since you speak the language. Bonus!

Those two links have all the info you'll need to travel by subway. The MTA link has important info such as fares, trip planners, planned and unplanned service advisories, etc...
Do you know the time and date you'll land? There are certain times that you just want to avoid the subway altogether, such as rush hours, late nights and planned subway maintenance.
Are there still Vans that pick up a group of people going to different hotels from the airport? You do pay but it was less than a taxi since there were 6-8 people on the van. That might be an option!!!
That was a good suggestion and.......Yes there still are vans. I know of two........ one company that services Connecticut and Westchester then you have another that services the NYC area. You can even call once you land at the airport and they will pick you up within like 40 minutes. Neither is too expensive at all. I use them for the employees at my company a lot ;-) You can look for their info online just look up NYC airport shuttle service. I would give you the info but I am allowed to provide it on here.

Thats for the replies guys, checked out those links and did a search for NYC airport shuttle and found out some usefull info, $15 for shuttle I like the idea of a 7 day unlimited metrocard. Is that unlimited card good for the airport stop?
I'm guessing here from looking at the map, from grand central catch the 7 train to times square then the 1,2 or 3 to 96th if thats right how long would that take, 9 stops on the london underground could take quite a while.
