I'm graduating from UT Austin this coming May and want to live the NYC Lifestyle. I do not have a job lined up yet and I can't imagine my rent budget would be more than $800-$1000 (I will room with someone). I am trying to figure out where I should live. I am 22, want to live somewhere with a good nightlife, and close to NYC. After researching, it seems Astoria, or Hoboken would be a good fit? Thoughts?

Hi Austin,

Merry Xmas.

Secure a job first, then look at neighborhoods once you've established a budget based on your income- you're not going to know what you can afford until you have steady employment. It is very hard to find a job in NYC, and there's lots of roommates and landlords who have gotten repeatedly burned by people who can't make the rent, so having a job lined up before you move is a pre-requisite. No landlord will rent to you without a job offer letter stating salary- that's the rule and not the exception here.

Unless you happen to have connections in NYC where a friend of yours would be willing to share his/her apartment with you until you find some work, you're probably not going to find roommates or landlords renting to those without a source of income.

NYC is not a very forgiving place when it comes to money or a lack thereof. Be prepared to spend 3-5 times what you currently spend in Austin for food, clothes, and entertainment. The cost of renting is only the tip of the iceberg of financial obstacles to navigate. Make sure you do your homework on that before you move.

you need to visit for two weeks to a month first. go to airbnb and find a sublet for a month. then go back to austin after staying for a month to plot out your plan. planning is key. trust me.

Somehow, "living the NYC lifestyle" sounds ominous. But I would suggest that you arrive with a fat wallet, find a cheap summer sublet, get a job, and then pair up with a roommate - rather than worrying in advance about neighborhoods.
