I was hoping to find a personal trainer in Jackson Heights, but I don't even know where to start. Craigslist doesn't seem like a good place.
I would prefer a female personal trainer and it would be nice to know their reviews.
I was initially looking to have a personal trainer for 2 weeks (just to kick my rear into gear and get me working out, as that first 1-2 weeks takes the most dedication--then I'm addicted to it.) However, I heard boot camps are great, too.
We live in one of the biggest cities in the world and I can't find something suitable. I really would like to NOT have to travel all the way to Manhattan for this, as I work really long days and don't want to waste it traveling.
Any suggestions? I know there has to be at least one fitness guru here.
Do you have a gym membership? NYSC has trainers and they're located in woodside and forest hills, not too far from jackson heights. There's also Astoria Sports Complex on Steinway, which is a private super cheap gym. I don't remember if they have personal training options but I would assume so. It's only $159 a year so definitely worth checking out. Only a few stops away from the 74th street jackson heights station.
If you're willing to do some research there is plenty of information online to train yourself. Also there's tons of videos on YouTube to put together a workout program for yourself.
Only reason to get a personal trainer is to get yourself motivated, or if you're already advanced and need those extra hard-to-get results. Otherwise save yourself money and do it on your own. Sooner or later you might get sick of a scheduled routine with your trainer. This is from my experience! But to each his own.
Wow, thanks you guys! I would prefer a 1 on 1 trainer for my first 2 weeks...daily..and I really DO need that as those first two weeks are when you break yourself in. I am someone who is SUPER easily bored, but once I get into a routine (usually takes just over a week) it's like I become addicted to working out.
Sure, I'd like to save the money..but at this point, saving the money has me in the SAME place still needing to lose the weight and gaining more, which is going to cost me a ton more than the $600-$1,000 I may have to shell out to get a personal trainer to get me on track. Believe me, I've been avoiding it for a while, but I'm biting the bullet.
Henna, I love the outdoor classes--perfect...what I will do after I can find a 1-on-1 personal trainer and jumpstart my first 2 weeks.

I was going to PM you the website of my current trainer at my gym. I believe he does individual session outside the gym and he lives in Queens/has a car. He is excellent. But you have your PM function turned off and I don't really want to post his info on the forum.

Remember Cherry,
Almost all gyms provide 1 free session with a trainer. So, when you join keep quiet about wanting a trainer until AFTER you've gotten your freebie.
I started lifting weights when I was 16 and now 4,000 years later, I have taught myself far more than any traiiner could know, but if you aren't well versed a GOOD trainer can help you prevent injury...but a BAD one can do you a lot of harm.
If trainers says A but you feel B is better...trust your gut until you are certain the trainer is worth his $50 an hour.
Needless to say, pick a trainer who has the body that YOU want to get.
(My last gym had an obese trainer????? He wondered why he didn't have many clients.)
I did Pure Power Boot Camp. Locations in Manhattan (W 23rd st) and Long Island (Jericho). It's run by former Marines and the training course is styled after military basic training. Very intense.
