Hello everybody,

I spent some time in this forum and realized that is is a great place to get info for places to live.

I come from Kosovo (southeastern of Europe). I am planning to immigrate to US. I have chosen the New York City to live in. But I need some help from the people already living there. I am going to describe below my position, and I hope you will find some time to advise me.

I possess a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering. My wife has a Bachelor Degree in Architecture. We are 24 years old. We have some experience here (approximately 2 years) in offices.

Can you suggest us which part of the New York City is the best (favorable) place to live and to have a good work. What is the cost of living for a couple? What about the incomes? In case if we couldn't find a job in our field, is there an easy way to find a work in restaurants, and is that possible to cover our expenses with those incomes (from restaurant say McDonald's)?

I would be very grateful to you if you could help me.

Best Regards,

Do you already have a immigrant visa for the USA?
Perhaps you should contact some immigrant group of people from your region that live in NYC for help.

I echo what Chava61 says.

Without a VISA you cannot work in the United States.

Before you apply for a VISA, why not come and visit for a week or so? Visit some employers and neighborhoods you are interested in?

I would call the Consulate General of Kosovo in NY, or the US Embassy in Pristina, Kosovo for more information.

Coming to the United States and relying on McDonald's for a primary source of income somehow doesn't sound like the best of all possible plans.

I'm sorry.... this made me laugh hysterically. Hope you realise NYC is one of the most expensive...if not THE MOST EXPENSIVE city in America. Flipping burgs @ McD's is not going to cut it.

Also, most of the time to rent an apt here you need to have a job already.

Are you a Kosovar of Albanian ethnicity? I think there are lots of Albanian families in Staten Island and Queens. Come to think of it: why are you posting this question on this forum? Usually, people of whichever ethnicity have contacts they can draw on. Hmmmmm. . . Is this what they call a troll?

Really. It sounds like a bad movie plot.

There are many people whose professional licenses or other qualifications are not valid in the U.S. because they're not recognized either by law or by whatever primary professional association exists here. Before you come I'd check to see if whatever engineering expertise, license, degree, etc that you have is recognized and accepted in the US. If it is you may be able to start working at something better than Mickey D's, which as others have pointed out, will not allow you to support yourself in NYC. In fact, I'd suggest that even sharing a place, you'd be hard-pressed to survive here on minimum wage.

Generally, I advise against highly educated people coming to America, Canada or Australia and living as second class citizens working in jobs that are beneath their skills. But if you must come to America, you might as well put your skills to good use and be entrepreneurial. Since you need a license to practice as an architect (not sure about civil engineers), why not in the meantime open a design/building consulting services business that offers people suggestions on how they can improve their homes/buildings for pay? Target the rich neighborhoods - lots of people there who don't know how to do things themselves. Or you can tutor wealthy children in math (geometry, calculus, algebra) at an hourly rate. You can advertise your business in craigslist. When you've saved enough, get your licenses and open a contracting/architectural firm. It beats flipping burgers in McDonalds, or punching the cash register in 7-11.

Lets share my story here man.
I'm from Hong Kong, 22 male with a bachelor in political science. 0 exp except some sort of student internship. obviously, i dun have any specialty and my language isnt that good.
i came last june with a green card and spent like 2 months looking for a job. fortunately, i got hired by health care company and so far has been working for 5months.

Housing is gonna be a problem and everything is just expensive here. and you have to rebuild your social network (dun know if you have relatives/friend here)

VISA is a must. No one would like to sponsor a working visa for you. Also, are you making a good living in Kosovo? You might barely able to get a high school job. Be ready to anything. Living in New York is tough.

cheer up
