I think most do it to provide even LOUDER nosie than ambient levels. Blocking out the 100 dB train with 120 dB music defeats the purpose.

Those who do it for a decade can trade them in for a shiny new set of hearing aids and WISH they could hear things a bit less loud than a train.

I hear ya, why on earth would you want to be able to hear someone yelling out to you "watch out!" when there's a car about to hit you or someone is running up on you when you can listen to DMX instead?

Going deaf at 40 because you needed a steady drone of music to blare over city noise, is not something to shrug off...unless you are planning a suicide at 39.

Music makes a 40min train ride feel like 20min.

I always have my headphones in so people(mainly guys tryin to get my #) wont bother me.

Depends on the person, I for one step out of my apartment with headphones on and do not take them off till I reach the office, they are back on when I head out to school and back on when I head back home. I am VERY alert, much more alert than those who walk around texting and walking into people, things, traffic. Like another poster said, my eyes and other senses are heightened.

I am one of those people that speed walk on both sides of the sidewalk, weaving and dodging annoying slow people (disincluding tourists) all the while abiding by the walk/do not walk signs. There are people without headphones that just like running in front of cars to try to catch the light, barely missing a speeding car.

In conclusion, its the people...not the music.

My feeling is, if someone wants to set things up so that they're deaf by the age of 40, that's their decision. I'm just concerned that they'll expect the taxpayers to finance their needs afterwards.

My concern also ! Because they will, and there will also be lawsuits. Researchers have already proven that a surprisingly low level of the earphone noise permanently compromises hearing.

I see them standing at the edge of the platform looking for the train and if there was someone right behind them ready to push them in, they wouldnt even know it because they're too focused on jamming to their favorite tunes. I see them crossing the streets almost getting killed because they dont hear the car honking or the bicyclist yelling out to them.

Maybe its just me but I like to be alert when on the streets of NYC. I want to be able to hear if theres something going down around me. Do I like music? Sure! I have my music on when at the gym, in my car, at home, or at a bar/lounge. I'll even have my earbuds handy with me while on the train just in case I have the luxury of sitting next to a crying child or 2 chatty women.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is, why would anyone want to have music in their ears all the time?
Agree. I enjoy the sounds of the city and being aware of what I am experiencing in the moment. I think we are rare.
