I don't know all about NYC, in fact I don't even know half of it. I do know, and many will agree with me, that New York City has improved a lot during the past 2 decades. Some neighborhoods have improved dramatically. Some improved little are probably because they were the good ones even in those bad old days.
I'm curious. Is there any neighborhood on decline? Any area that is worse than it was during the Koch or Dinkins era?
A lot of people claim that any neighborhood that was once almost all white and has transitioned to a mostly minority neighborhood has "declined"or gone "downhill". Usually though,if you analyze and compare the crime rates, look at the poverty rates or see pictures of what the area used to look like 20 years ago,you will see that the neighborhood might actually be better off than it was "in the good old days."
In relation to late 80's early 90's I can't think of one area in the bronx or manhattan that I can say has gotten worse. Most I would say have improved, some have stayed more or less the same.
I agree I don't think any areas have really worsened crime wise but you can definitely make the case that in terms of QOL certain areas have declined... Some neighborhoods that come to mind are (Woodhaven, Canarcie, Flatlands, Brighton Beach (violent crime has increased in this area in recent years along with Sheepshead Bay))... Again some areas are worse than others but in terms of the Brooklyn neighborhoods if you were to ask me about Canarcie and Flatlands 5-10 years ago i'd say that anyone saying the area is bad needs to check themselves but nowadays there are definitely parts of these areas that have declined significantly and see their fair share of QOL issues as well as other problems...
Kingsbridge (between Broadway and Irwin Avenue) is largely minority but seems little changed over what it used to be decades ago. Still stable and safe.
Subtle changes to some Queens neighborhoods like North Hollis, Queens Village, Holliswood due mostly to the loss of elderly population. They used to be quieter neighborhoods but I'd say that they're still as safe as they were.
Richmond Hill/Jackson Heights areas used to be way worse in the 80s and 90s... South Ozone Park was never great to begin with either... Ozone Park and Woodhaven I agree with though...
