Now that you've mentioned it, I've also noticed a drastic change in the farthest reaches of the West Village over the last decade (or two.)
As the bulk of the gay population moved to Chelsea it seems the Village has truncated into the Uber-rich in waterfront glass towers and itinerant street hangers-on mobbing the Christopher Street area.

Those "black drag queens and drug dealers" were there long before the glass towers. Watch Paris is burning filmed between 86-90 if you dont belive me. And they were there long before that.

I've heard a few mention Ozone Park. Some one said the reason is street thugs from East New York have upper hands while organized crime fade away.
Exactly it. Where I use to live, people were always getting mugged or getting their houses broken into, and whenever the perps got caught, they were almost always from East New York. Thank God I moved from there.
It's a shame too, when I first moved to Ozone park from East New York in 1995, I was very happy. Some sections of the neighborhood were just as safe and clean as Howard Beach.
