Does anyone know of a good bakery in brooklyn or lower manhattan? I'm looking for a good quality cake, but i don't want to pay more than about $20.
At that price you're looking at supermarket cakes--which isn't necessarily bad. I've gotten some good ones at Food Emporium in Union Square (made to order believe it or not) and the garden of Eden. I think about $15 will get you a very small but delicious cake at the garden of Eden.
I know a few fantastic independent bakeries as well, but you'll pay far more than $20 for a full cake.
Jubilee Supermarket at the corner of John and Gold Streets sell Carousel Cakes at significantly reduced prices. Carousel claims that their red velvet cake is on Oprah's favorite things list. I'm not sure, but when I serve that cake to my friends, they always go crazy. The price of the cake online is $40, but you can buy the cake at Jubilee for $20. They have other Carousel Cakes for $20 also.
thank you all for your suggestions. i have tried the pecan streussel cake at wholefoods. it's delicious, but i was looking for another kind of cake to alternate with it.
i will try the bakery at john st. appreciate the suggestion.
Since I see that no one here has had any bakeries to suggest, perhaps you should try asking on Chowhound.
