Hello All,
My wife is going for her second interview for a job in NYC, we currently live in Fort Worth, TX. I feel confident that she will probably end up getting this job. I am trying to do some research as to what to expect in the process of relocation. A few questions...
Will I need a broker for housing? We also have bad credit, how hard will it be to get a decent place to live? We have great rental history and currently own a home here in TX.
Although this job will be a boost financially, even with the cost of living increase, we can't afford to live in manhattan, this is where said job would be, so I was thinking queens or brooklyn... anyone have favorite neighborhoods?
I have 2 cars here in texas we plan on selling both. One car is paid for the other we are making payments on. How would I go about selling the one that is not paid for anyone know?
I will have to find a job so are there any good NYC job websites out there?
Thanks for any input on this.

You would do better in terms of finding something quickly with a real estate agent. They DO have credit checks done.
Frankly, I don't see why anyone would want a car in NYC, much less TWO cars. Insurance is expensive and parking is a nightmare. Garages START at about $300/month in the boroughs (not Manhattan) and go up from there.
Would you consider buying? If you sell your current home, while it won't buy a comparable home here, you could buy something in the 'burbs, most likely. In which case a car would make more sense.
Yeah, I dont' think its the best idea to be advising people from Texas to move to the Bronx, especially not Marble Hill. Hell I think Queens & Brooklyn are going to be a culture shock enough if this couple decides to move there.
OP, why don't you look into one of the suburban areas outside of the city? North Jersey, Long Island, and Westchester are all nice places to live. Living in the Outer Boroughs is a very different from anywhere else in the country; cramped living conditions, foreigners all over the place who don't speak English, and filthy sidewalks and public transportation.
Are you familiar at all with the area? If not you better visit some neighborhoods before you sign a lease.

Most people just use craigslist to find rentals.
Unless your wife is making 70k, you'd better find a job before coming here.
I'm in Middle Village, and it's nice. A 2 bedroom could run you anywhere from 1100 to 1600/month, plus utilities. Usually you have to give a month's rent and a month's security. If you go with a real estate agent, tack on another month's rent for commission.
I've also lived in Whitestone which is also very nice, close to the water. =)
hey,
Thanks for all the replies. As far as the cars go, we defiantly want to get rid of them.
I don't think we will consider buying just yet and the burbs really don't appeal to us.
I will keep updating as we get more info. thanks again
If you're interested in Queens, check out about.com for Queens, as they have many articles on different areas of the borough. The NY Times also has neighborhood profiles for many areas in all five boroughs.
Only caveat...some areas of Queens are more suburban in feel, and farther from Manhattan, but can be safer/cleaner etc. Depends on what you prefer.
Yeah but suburban by our standards is not suburban by Texas standards. Even "suburban" areas of Queens like Bayside and Douglaston would be very dense for most Texans.
I haven't been to Fort Worth, but I've spent a good ammount of time down in Houston, Galveston and Sugar Land.
Just make sure you visit your neighborhood thoroughly before you move there. Go there at night and make sure you feel safe.
Forrest Hills and Middle Village are nice areas, but I dont' know if a Texan would fit in there. I honestly don't know of an area of the outer boroughs where someone from the South would really fit in. Maybe Northern Brooklyn, but the rent is really high and its hipsterville over there.
