Just curious. I only been to the Bronx a few times in my life, as I usually try my best to avoid it like the plague, but I heard alot of positive things about these two neighborhoods and I'm interested in taking photos around there.
I live in Riverdale, which is larger than Woodlawn geographically. North Riverdale is similar in appearance to Woodlawn and is about the same size geographically. Both are the safest areas in NYC
Hey Seventh. When'd you become a moderator? Congratulations.
Yeah both areas are really safe. I don't think you have to worry about anything while taking pictures. You might get stared at if you just randomly start taking pictures of people on the street.
Doom Dan...why do you "try your best to avoid the Bronx like the plague?" Are you not a Yankees fan? Have you no appreciation for the impressive Botanical Gardens and Bronx Zoo..best in the city! Are you against University environments...as the Bronx has Manhattan College, Mount St. Vincent, Fordham University, Suny Maritime, Lehman College, and a host of other community and secondary educational institutions. Maybe you dislike open space and parks, as the Bronx has the most parkland of any borough, as well as the largest park in the city, Pelham Bay.
It could be that you enjoy paying astronomical prices for rent and/or buying a home, as the Bronx has the most affordable housing (rental and sales), and is the epicenter of new, upscale affordable housing going forward. Or maybe its just that you dislike colored folks? They do dominate the borough....either way...I don't understand why you would choose to "avoid the place like the plague."
But regarding your question, Riverdale and Woodlawn are regarded by many as safe. I am unclear as to how you define "safe", but they are regarding by many as being "safe."
It is too bad that you feel like the Bronx should be avoided. Though I haven't lived there in many a year, there have always been places that are interesting to visit. Apparently, it still conjures up dangerous images for you.
Let's put it this way- we are living in a time where everyone is perceptibly a little more kinder and gentler. Meaning you most probably wouldn't be accosted anywhere there. Woodlawn and Riverdale have always been considered nice areas and you shouldn't feel afraid while there.
Enjoy your pictures.
I avoid the Bronx mainly because of the borough's reputation for crime. The only areas in the Bronx I have ever been to are South Bronx when I was a child, and recently, City Island.
