It's an engineering problem that will be solved one day. It has no relation to a fantasy written about a magical floating world. Think Einstein would have said that the idea of a billion computers all over the world talking to each other in real-time was as real as Peter Pan? No, because he's not an idiot and would know that technology does this thing where it... progresses.

See, here's the thing. You need electricity. Living in close proximity to many people is actually incredibly unpleasant without electricity. Guess what provides electricity? Power plants, of course! Guess what the safest and most efficient power plants are, as proven by decades of actual recorded history? Nuclear power plants! Guess what the ONLY possible method of providing the amount of clean electricity we will need if we want to move away from fossil fuels is? Nuclear power plants!

No, you would not, because Buchanan is 42 miles away. Fukushima had no effects anywhere near that distance. But, even so...

You're focusing on one remotely possible danger too much. If the tsunami hit would you be fine (remember, the two events were inextricably intertwined)? Or if The Big Hurricane comes as it inevitably will and wipes out New York as Katrina wiped out New Orleans you'd be fine? If a terrorist blows up Manhattan you'll be fine? POWER GENERATION, though, is what we have to worry about! Ha! Please.

Moreover, Fukushima is not some barren zombie wasteland. Read up on the actual reported radiation numbers and you might be surprised by how much of a non-event it was outside of the plant itself. In addition, Fukushima was a 40+ year old plant poorly designed from the beginning that was only damaged by the combination of a massive tsunami and a massive earthquake simultaneously. Your idea that Fukushima bears ANY RELATION WHATSOEVER to a modern nuclear power plant in the New York metro area (much less 42 miles away!) is simply a misunderstanding of the technology and events involved.

And YOU miss the point that power plants are connected to the city by WIRES. And wires can run hundreds of miles so generating electricity in the midst of 20 million people is moronic and foolhearty, and worse, totally unnecessary.

And that is why it will NEVER happen...just like cold fusion and perpetual motion machines and PETER PAN.

We have had some stupid politicians but none has EVER been so stupid as to propse a nuclear plant in the City It is the dumbest idea of 2012, and this is an election year so dumb ideas abound.

Nope, coal and gas plants do not belong in the City and will soon be gone. Cars and cabs spewing their noxious gases should be banned, not taxed, not tolled...BANNED. Only necessary delivery vehicles and emergency vehicles should be allowed. Put the cops on bikes. Run buses on electricity generated far, far, FAR away from people...the Yukon comes to mind, so does Texas.

We have subways...the way to get around.

I hope the Union breaks Con-ed's back the same way Bane broke Batmans back over his knee.

If the union gets their ways, con-ed will definitely pass on the cost to the customers. Get really to pay higher electricity rates.

You forget that my original statement was that I'd rather have a fusion plant in New York City than a coal/natural gas plant.

Do you even know what cold fusion is?

But they've been dumb enough to go along with coal and natural gas plants which are far more dangerous to the areas health than a fusion plant.

Ah, so you're just a lunatic. Thanks for clearing that up, I won't need to respond to you anymore.

Yeah, then we can pay the bill since con ed will pass the cost to us.

Angry I don't get it.

Did anyone see this on their ConEd bill? I did. People aren't hot under the collar about this?

Quote:
This is an estimated bill. We could not read your meter this month because of a work stoppage. The estimate is based on your energy use during a comparable billing period last year, adjusted for variations in the weather. To avoid future estimated bills, you may submit your meter reading by calling 1 800 491 0095 or by visiting coned.com/myaccount. We will begin reading your meter again after the stoppage ends. Thank you for understanding.
"Thank you for understanding"? The thing is, I don't understand. What if I was away alot this month and ConEd still used "July 2011" as a way to judge what this month's bill should be? This is upsetting. I'm surprised nobody has said much about this.

grimace,
It will all come out in the wash.
If you are billed DOUBLE what you should be for any particular month because they averaged you bill, when they EVENTUALLY read your meter you will be billed a smaller amount.
The meter tells the TOTAL over time.

Thus some people even choose get a constant billing based on the previous year, so they can budget monthe to month. Then once a year, the meter is READ and that last bill will usuallly be very high or very low (sometimes nothing) to make up the difference between the guesstimates and reality.

So what averaging does is just postpone correct billing. You don't lose or gain anything.
