Hey all. My roommates and I are thinking of moving up to Central Harlem. We looked at this gorgeous apartment on W 141 St and Adam Clayton Powell. It was gorgeous and extremely affordable. The building was a little busted, but I was willing to look past that. We've been living in NY for a while, but we've been in Astoria so we're a little sheltered. Also, I'm white and my two roommates are black. Is Central Harlem still going to be unsafe for us at night? Will I be more unsafe since I'll stick out more? Or am I being ignorant? I hope that I am, because I loved the apartment.

What, exactly, is safe? If you feel safe, you're good to go. If you don't feel safe, you shouldn't move there. In either case, you shouldn't let other people tell you which neighborhoods are "safe" and which ones aren't.

It's safe, I lived on 143 and ACP for a year, never had any problems. The locals were actually friendly and recommended where to get good fried fish and other foods. Just smile and make eye contact. There's a Pathmark near there-its a circus, but at least its convenient. And you are close to #3. Riverbank state park is a short busride away on the Bx149 - it's the only urban rooftop park outside of Japan, which is pretty cool. The only issue is walking up that hill to get to the A, D and the good dominican food on Broadway. I say go for it.

Drew-Hamilton Houses is right across the street and they're not exactly safe...
