As a single person who makes 90k/yr, I don't know how people who make less make it in this city.

A good salary around here is 100k+, considering "normal" apartments go for 2500-3500/month.

But what about the people who work at McDonalds, people who do cleaning, taxi drivers, etc etc. How can they afford apartments, foods, entertainment, etc. Blows my mind.

Luckily for me, I'm renting something very cheap in a good area but not everyone's lucky to find cheap stuff around here. idk...

You gotta have cheap or no rent to pull it off. When I was young and worked min wage jobs, I had to have 2 and I still used my savings as a cushion to be able to afford rent/bills and that was when rent was much cheaper.

You would already know the answer to this having claimed to be from Sao Paulo. Are you looking for money saving tips?

If one has a relatively low rent and is careful with their money and doesn't need to go out all the time, it isn't a problem to make it in NYC on much less money.

First requisite is that anyone who make minimum wage does NOT have one of these "normal" apartments. Neither is he living alone.

The same question was asked by new master of the universe (wall st. investment banker).
how can anyone survive in this city with anything less than 6 figures is beyond my comprehension!

The question in itself gives you a glimpse into the mindset of the person asking it.

The average income per capita in NY is around 50k, so go figure.

People who earn the minimum wage typically will be susbsidized by taxpayers through various programs, which pay wholly or partly their rent (like Section 8), and can receive other assistance like food stamps, medicaid, etc. The city also has affordable housing specifically for lower-income working residents. So basically companies get to pay their workers pitiful wages and push off the actual costs of the employee to taxpayers...gotta love it!

Why taxpayers must subsidize private company employees is beyond me....our government is bought and controlled by these companies...and it is a monumental fleecing.

many people with min wage jobs do get some form of govt assistance. but there are also many who are NOT the only ones in a household, and get help from others. so a single mom may be living with her working brother, or cousin, or even her own mom who gets social security. there are also many people who do some work in the underground non-taxed economy too. everything from hairdressers to gypsy cab drivers to dope dealers to add to whatever meager earnings they have.
