How much to save before moving? (Washington Heights: rent, neighborhood, incomes) - New York City - New York (NY) - City-Data Forum

I might be staying in a free room in Washington Heights, but I'm not 100% sure on those arrangements yet. If not, I'll probably be moving to Astoria or a relatively inexpensive part of Brooklyn. I'm single, no kids or anything. How much should I save before moving out to NYC?

save as much as you can, when my fiancee and I moved here with 10K, that amount disappeared in about 5 months.

10K lasted 5 months? That's actually pretty good, IMO. I would expect 10K to only last 3 months at most!

Yeah, it was pretty good work between the two of us, and we were lucky enough to get a place where the rent was really cheap to start out with, and we have since found work so we are balanced out. I am looking for something full time so that we can have two full incomes and will then be able to move over to a nice neighborhood in Brooklyn.
