This is a little further up on the L train than the Wilson Avenue apartment I asked about but wound up falling through (thanks for the replies, btw). This area seems a little nicer, if further, and oh yes there are bargains to be had! But what about safety?

It's not safe as the area can be pretty deserted at night and it is considered East New York, which is one of the worst parts of Brooklyn.

LOL Im done... cla75 i mean this with the utmost sincerity... whoever you're talking to for cheap apartments... dump them now... move on and look around... Nowhere past Dekalb on the L line is good... Anyone who tries to convince you otherwise is only thinking about their own selfish purposes...
Look into these Queens areas... decent rents and much better QOL than where you are currently looking...
Woodside
Elmhurst
Astoria (if you're bent on living the "hip" life)
Sunnyside
College point
Jackson Heights (look around, not all of it is good)
Richmond Hill
Maspeth
Kew Gardens
Isnt there a bike service that escorts women from subway to home at night in brooklyn? You just call them and they come and escort you to your place. Its free and its been vetted by nypd. I forget their names...
I don't know what your budget is that you keep asking about the crappy parts of Brooklyn, but if your need to be on the L line is that great or to be close to the "hip" areas, then you might be better off in Queens or possibly the south side of Williamsburg by the J train. However bear in mind the safety in South Williamsburg will be on a block by block basis.
Otherwise you will have to bite the bullet and get roommates like most other transplants do that want to be by a "hip" area and are on a budget. Safe and cheap do not go hand in hand here typically unless you want to be away from the "hip" areas.
