I will be attending a CUNY college and staying at the Towers which is located on 130th street in Harlem. Can you tell me what you know about this place? Is it safe, I hear it is getting better and not as bad as it is percieved to be. What can you tell me?
I need all the advice I can get, I'm from a small town in Syracuse which is literally the complete oppisite of NYC. All help is appreciated!
I live just around the corner from there, you should be fine. Although I'm more familiar with the western area, like along Riverside Drive, but just keep your head up and I don't anticipate you'll have any troubles. My ex is a tiny girl and she lived with me for two years and never had any issues.
Get a female roommate. Preferably someone who is older than you. City life is different and requires a lot of street smarts. Most is common sense but well anyway……
Some rules you need to know:
1. Always travel in pairs
2. Learn the ropes from your roommate
3. If you are going somewhere for the first time, ask someone to accompany you
4. Never leave valuables (iphone, money, keys) out in the open
5. Building a network is key if you want to survive in the city aka get some friends
Partying rules:
1. If you are a party girl....please remember the purpose of college is to get a job not to get drunk
2. Never take the subway alone
3. Bring sandals
4. Group, Group, Group…..Group
5. Make sure one of your friends remain sober
Fact vs. Fiction:
Every school is different, but don’t be fooled by the media. In most cases you’ll just be going to local bars or attending school events. The reality is that most college kids are too broke to partake in this “awesome night scene”. Moreover, bouncers have gotten stricter with their fake ID policy. Yeah good luck getting in if you don’t know anybody.
