I say here is just some of the fun you can encounter in Canarsie. I still don't get the logic of posters who try to say Canarsie was more crime ridden in the 70s and 80s. Canarsie is ghetto with some well maintained homes.

I agree being there recently that there are some parts of Canarcie that have definitely deteriorated... That being said, there were always parts of Canarcie that had been bad and especially way worse all the way back into the 80s and without question the 90s as opposed to now...

The above post is from a person who does not know wtf they are talking about!

Oh, about the 70s/80s, maybe because the Mafiaso was going around bang bang in broad daylight. Also, one of the most feared and nortorious crews had their headquarters in Carnarsie.

You know *crime*, the organized kind!

*****

All those with the negative comments, DO NOT live in Canarsie, and have never lived in Carnarsie. I doubt they have any connection to it, nor the surrounding areas of Flatlands or Flatbush!!!

The problem for these folks is either pure RACISM or absolute racial PREJUDICE!! They lament the days when Carnarsie was ALL white! They lament the day the Projects went black. They lament that Carnarsie is now BLACK!

For these people, ANY majority black neighborhood is a HORROR!! All you have to see is black skin, and they KNOW the place!

They don't know sht, and should S T F U!

They dion't live there. They don't know what it is like to live there. They have absoluteely NO personal experience nor knlwledge of the quality of life iin Carnarsie.

ALL they know is that the people living there, the people who somewhow, miraculously have afforded to purchase all those homes, have black skin!

Racist, Prejudice, Fks!

*****

These same Fks fail to realize that TODAY, Carnarsie is SAFER for a Black person than back in the day, when racist whites ran 'bat patrol'!!

So, wtf, and who are they talking about?

They also neglect to acknowledge, the bodies the mafiaso and white gangster used to drop in the area, as well as the "war" that went on, from Carnarsie to Kings Plaza to Gravessend, Mafia Wars.

Hypocrits!

****

OP, Carnarsie is a wholly residential suburban like neighborhood. In recent decade, turned majorily Hatian black. There is NO nightlife! These people have to go to sleep, cause they have to work in the mornings; or, they are working at night, as there is a high percentage of medical workers.

Putting the housing projects aside, there is a very low percentage of multi unit rental housing. The majority of housing consists of 2 family homes, in which one may find a 1 bdrm or studio rental, in either a 'built for' space or a converted garage.

It is a middle class to lower middle class area with POOR transportation options. The "L" train being the primary means to access Manhattan. The majority of residents utilize an automobile and do not work in Manhattan. It is a family neighborhood. It is NOT and will NOT be gentrifying!

Present day Carnarsie, represents the EMBODIMENT of the American Dream for Hatian Americans, where, in wholesale fashion, the consequence of *white flight*, as a group, those prepared have been able to attain **homeownership***, and the Brooklyn version of suburban like lifestyle.

The American Melting Pot!

Where one they were poor immigrants, speaking little English, desparate to survive, now they are Americans, WORKING americans, contributors to society, middle class nurses, technicians, and small business owners, who have grasped the American Dream!

Brooklyn in daaaa House!!

****

Now, that said, the one thing I do lament, is that the Haitians and other West Indians, have brought a higher *density* to Carnarsie, than had previously existed, and with that there are far more people on the streets, which is an odd site and feeling, compared to Carnarsie of old, which was a very quiet place with little obvious street life, because of the lower density.

Now, don't get confused, Carnarsie was ALWAYS a working class (they didn't build those white people projects for notihing) to middle class neighborhood , with DRUGS, heroin, pot, cocaine, and an underbelly of *white* crime!! Just think of the 50s/60s/70s and the American Drug culture combined with the Mob!

Carnasie wasn't Midwood, wasn't Flatbush, wasn't Bergen Beach!

Carnarsie High School and South Shore High School, might have been white, but weren't exactly academic bastions. They weren't Erasmus, nor Midwood, not even Madison!

Be real! Working class heaven for some, not so for others....even Howard Schultz, who grew up in the Bayview Houses (white projects) said it sucked!!

Could this be why, 'White' Carnarsie, gets its bad rep?:

Ghe thing to note, watch the street traffic, there isn't any! Cars, but not a single sole on foot. THAT is Carnarsie/Flatlands, then and now; white or black. A quiet simple area. So, what are the posters in this thread talking about???

I agree with you that posters who speak of Canarcie being a hellhole now compared to previous generations are simply using prejudice to form their opinions... That being said, when I mention deteriorate what I speak of is QOL and you cannot tell me being there recently that it doesn't seem as if the quality of life in Canarcie has taken a step back in recent years... You're not being honest with yourself if you disagree... I look at it almost as I would a Woodhaven though to a much smaller extent... Is there technically less crime now than before? Yes... But just like with Woodhaven, there are certain parts that just look more run-down than they used to than when I last went there about five years ago...
