I think we are witnessing (have witnessed) the beginning of the Golden Era of New York City.

The most famous city in the modern world. It is the undisputed world capital. Center of the universe.

The real estate market is scorching hot. Uber-luxury billionaire abodes like 432 Park Avenue, 225 West 57th Street, and One57 are sprouting up all across the most famous island in the world. A brand new business district is forming in the Hudson Yards. The World Trade Center is preparing to establish Lower Manhattan as the USA's number two business hub. The tech sector is now the second most important in the world behind Silicon Valley.

The world's rich want to live here. Celebrities want to live here. The Chinese are invading. Australians are purchasing record penthouses in Queens.

Harlem is gentrifying. The Bronx is next. Long Island City and Brooklyn are seeing Manhattan style rents.

Folks, we must revel in our glory right now. It may not last forever. God bless this city!

We should rename Hudson Boulevard, Bloomberg Boulevard!

Well, it's good for people who can afford to buy now. Everyone else is going to have a hell of a time.

Hm. I wonder if that's all going to crash and burn once the people who really make this city great can no longer afford to scrape by here.

The city has been going through a revitalization. Reasons include:

•Across the world people have come to the realization that auto-dependency is unsustainable.

•Beyond energy and resources, cities prove to be centers of social connection leading to innovations in arts and sciences.

•Cities are the centers of entertainment and culture. Museums, day/nightlife, restaurants, galleries, events, educational institutions are concentrated in cities.

•Cities are humanity, they account for the majority of the population.

•Globalization, diversity breeds new ideas. Cities provide the grounds for this interaction.

New York's density, walk ability, mixed zoning, and diversity are a recipe for success considering these factors. It is then place to be. To live and learn. In most aspects it surpasses cities worldwide.

It is unsustainable but a necessity in today's world. Would you like to be transported to Harlem Hospital or Beth Israel in a carriage pulled by an ox?

Being evacuated in an ambulance has absolutely nothing to do with auto-dependency. Auto-dependency has everything to do with the built environment.

We must not cater to automobiles in our cities. You can design urban areas to maximize walkability, therefore eliminating the need for a car. To maximize walkability, you need dense housing and mixed zoning. NYC currently excels in this aspect compared to other American cities but more must be done.

Throughout most of the United States you literally need a car to get anything done. The built environment prioritizes the auto. So many potential social connections, lost. So many economic opportunities, lost (think window shopping on the way home from work). Also, what is to happen as competition for resources only becomes greater between nations? Suburban living requires much more per person. Pollution? Crashes? Congestion?

This is why the DOT is pushing for bike lanes, bike share, plazas, traffic calming and green ways. This is why most new developments are transit oriented and mixed use. Yet NIMBYs still complain about improvements in their own communities (See Prospect Park bicycle lanes/street calming). NYC canNOT support any more automobiles. We are well beyond capacity and loose out economically. Every parking lot is a loss, every garage is a loss.

We are far ahead of the game in the USA because of our built environment. Notice all the top world class cities are extremely walkable.

Not wanting to be dependent on automobiles doesn't mean eliminating them entirely.
