Look at the first picture of the old train riding revenue service. How often does the MTA run these old trains in regular service? Do they announce it in advance so that you can ride the train? Or do you just have to get lucky? Just wondering. Thanks in advance!

They generally run the train on Sundays between Thanksgiving and New Years every year requiring only the normal subway fare. The MTA posts the schedule of the train on its website. mta.info | Home Page. During the summer the Transit Museum Charters the trains out but the cost is usually 30-50$ to ride it. I hope this helps.
