Well I'm glad you are the ultimate authority on this. I've lived in Soho for eight years and I'd 1000% live in hoboken before ever venturing into queens, bronx, above 96th st.

It's the same up in Boston, but I sometimes think that NYC has more apartments for a reasonable price in good neighborhoods. I consider Elmhurst to be very good neighborhood.

Sure, Manhattan has the excitement, but I'd rather live in mixed income/race/ethnic enclave I live in now than in closet on the other side of the river. Queens is actually quite charming.

Hoboken is simply awful.

What areas are you suggesting? And, what income are you considering middle class?

I make a lot less than 110-120k, but I make a lot more than 50k. So not sure where I fit in.

Hard to say, since I'm not yet in that situation: I don't currently work in NYC (I live and work on Long Island, but if I ever lose my job, NYC is probably the only option), and I don't have kids yet, so it's hard to say exactly how much my budget would be if/when I'm in that situation (after having 2 kids and being laid off from my job on Long Island). I make about $85,000 per year at my current job on Long Island.

The rent is too high because it's too crowded.

My guess is that for the reasons you think hoboken is awful, I feel Harlem is awful. Maybe we can agree to leave it at that.

Hoboken is awful in the first place because of the defensiveness of people ...
interesting !
And I do not "feel" that Hoboken is awful. As you point out, and you are right, I "think" rather than "feel."
Unfortunately, I have lots of first-hand experience. Which helped in forming that responsible opinion.
